Armen Ashotyan Urges His German Colleague to Be Persistent for Study of Military Cooperation between Rheinmetall and Azerbaijan

On July 12, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Armena Ashotyan met with the Member of the Bundestag of Germany Nikolas Löbel and the Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Armenia Klaus Wendelberger.

Welcoming the guests in the RA National Assembly, Armen Ashotyan touched upon the issues of activation of cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments, highlighting the implementation of joint works at the level of the Inter-parliamentary Friendship Groups and Assemblies. In this context Armen Ashotyan expressed hope that related to the implementation of the qualitative new, more constructive cooperation of Germany-South Caucasus Parliamentary Group.

The sides also referred to the ratification of Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership. The Committee Chair emphasized the possible quick ratification in the national parliaments of the European Union Member States, expressing hope to have also the ratification by the German Parliament in the near future. Armen Ashotyan Also underlined the role of the parliamentary oversight regarding use of the Agreement and highlighted the study of the German experience.

During the talk the parties talked about the recent processes going on in Armenia and discussed issues related to the electoral legislation reforms. Armen Ashotyan has noted that in the process of the electoral legislation reforms all political forces highlight the establishment of the reforms by political wide consent, the public involvement and on the basis of exclusively international principles, particularly the recommendations of the Venice Commission and the OSCE/ODIHR.

The Committee Chair also touched upon the Memorandum signed between the Rheinmetall Company and the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan and urged his German colleague to be consistent for more comprehensive study of the problem.

Armen Ashotyan has noted that all the forces functioning in the political field of Armenia irrespective of the differences of the approaches in the independent political issues are united in the regional and foreign political front, establishing the state interest as priority.
